Terrains

Plains
  • Pop based economy
  • Chief Advantages +20% pop max, +40% food, +30% speed, + 10% attack
  • Their pop max and food bonuses means it's cheaper for plains to support large armies
  • Their speed bonus speeds their leaders home after battles
  • Chief Disadvantage -30% Mining, -20% Lumber
  • Recommended for any race other than human and any class other than Magi and Feudal
Hills
  • Mining Based Economy
  • Chief Advantages +10% defense, +45% mining
  • Chief Disadvantags -10% speed
  • Hills can support larger armies than mountains, so late game they are more efficient on the same land
  • Hills players get guaranteed return order with characters against monsters
Mountains
  • Mining Based Economy
  • Advantages -40% speed, +25% defense, +80% mining
  • Disadvantages -30% speed, -25% food, -10% population, -10% crime rate
  • The speed is a double-edged sword, one, it slows down your leaders, meaning you can't attack as often, so it's disadvantage. But, two, it slows down people who attack you, which discourages many players.
  • Supporting a large army is costly for Mountains players
  • The nice thing about playing mountains is you never have to rob iron
  • 5% extra defense against assassinations, +10% spell defense against possession type spells
Coastal
  • Pop based Economy
  • Advantages +20% speed, +10% attack, +15% taxes, +15% population, +30% food, +5% defense, +10% crime rate
  • These advantages means you can support a very large army on Coastal.
  • Disadvantages -25% mining, -15% lumber, so, you'll be stealing iron
  • This is a good terrain for non-humans who are active and think they'll have a lot of land and nw later in the game.
Barren
  • Mining (or pop) based economy
  • Advantages +35% attack, +30% speed, +10% taxes, +30% research, +10% crime rate
  • In addition
    • When attacking monters Barren players will receive their terrain bonus
    • When attacking players they will take extra land
  • Disadvantages -35% food, -25% lumber, -15% pop max
  • The disadvantages make growing and supporting a large army difficult and cumbersome
  • This is likely the most dreaded terrain, and with it's many advantages a very common terrain
Forest
  • Pop based economy
  • Advantages +10% Defense, +10% speed, +25% food, +75% lumber, +10% population, +25% crime rate, +10% research
  • Disadvantages -10% mining
  • The real weakness to forest is the lack of a speed bonus, meaning you can't make as many attacks per day as a plains or barren player
  • Forest players will receive an extra 3% per roll chance for magic items
Notes Crime Rate affects spy and thief production. Positive Crime rate is better.
